A Two Year program

 

 

At Travis TAG, it is a requirement that all middle school students take two years of world language classes. Currently, Travis TAG is requiring Russian, French or Spanish in 7th and 8th grade. Most, if not all of our graduating students go straight on into higher level language classes in High School, bypassing first year level, and even second year in some cases. This year we are trying a pilot program for 7th graders who wish to take Russian. We hope this will work out and expand our world languages program.

 

Until such time as DISD decides if we can offer world languages as a true elective class in 6th grade, we will probably continue with our “language exploratory” which is adding mini-units on 3 or 4 world languages to the 6th grade curriculum. We have found, in the past, that doing this means the students make a better choice of which language they would prefer when they reach 7th grade.
