Sharing the best kept secret in DISD.

Who can be a Travis kid?

Travis TAG accepts applications from students currently in grades 3 through 7. The selection process takes place in the spring for the following school year.

· Travis TAG students are high-aptitude students.

· Students that are “under”-challenged by their present school.

· Students with a natural love of school and a desire for learning.

· Students that need guidance, not poking or prodding.

· Students with committed parents that understand that the demands of a magnet school are above and beyond a neighborhood school.

· Students (and parents) that understand that they may gain their first B or C learning to move at a higher rate and think for deeper understanding.

· Students willing to take on two years of a world language in addition to an enriched middle school curriculum.

· Students who intend to go on to a Magnet program High School.

· Students who are not necessarily the “teacher pleaser”, but perhaps the “teacher challenger”.

DISD has other schools for those students who have other gifts, such as the gift of artistic ability. Travis TAG commits to those students who show academic excellence.

Travis TAG is a DISD Magnet School, thus students from anywhere in the DISD area can apply. Furthermore, Travis students are eligible for bus transportation services TO and FROM the school. Travis TAG can take students from outside of the DISD coverage area (under certain conditions).

Note 1: Travis TAG students must take the TAKS test yearly like all other public school students. The school enjoys some of the highest score rankings in the STATE. Daily TAKS worksheets are not the Travis way. Travis students are expected to not only PASS TAKS, but to score Commended Performance.

Note 2: Under current Magnet Schools policy, any Travis student who fails the school year academically, fails to pass all sections of the TAKS test, or has excessive absences will return to their neighborhood school and forfeit their place at Travis for the following year. They MAY attend summer school and still be promoted to the next grade, but NOT at Travis.
